New release for May 2009 ! The latest PLAY track, an amazingly rich 6/4 "double-waltz" version of Darren's old soulful breakup track "I would not (have to be cool)", originally written and performed 20 years ago as a blues-like 4/4 piece. Recorded between Darren in Sydney and Michael in Berlin, this is the result of years of work and PLAY, and lots of time just talking about doing it. And now it's done. Und wie !

This is the story of a love, that wasn't quite true.
And how I changed myself, for you.
Of course it couldn't last that way.

Mellow Drama

PLAY's signature "organic electro" anthem song, with incredible layered 6/4, 12/8 rhythms and Darren's trademark "metatone" echo FX. Listen for Michael's screaming "very electric guitar" solos at the end, weaving in and out of the guitar-like vocals. Boys with toys having fun !

The song is about the wonderful lightness of being of very young children, and about loss of innocence, how our lives can depart from our childhood source and become a drama, as we can forget the simplest childhood pleasures, in a rush to become "grown up":

Yummy, yummy, yummy, ...

From circa 1996. Solo organic electro keyboards from Darren (and a personal favourite). Very spacey. There is barely any editing, it's just two stereo layers of very full keyboards played one after the other on a night when every note just seemed to sit right. And it makes shameless heavy use of keyboards, and only keyboards. Darren's love of Bach is clear here.

Album: After Work in Hamburg

in

The defining organic electro album, with pumping layered echo keyboards from Darren and Michael's "very electric" guitar on 2 tracks. Recorded between 1996-1998, these pieces were also performed live at Hamburg venues such as Kunst, Marquee, and Prinzenbar.

There's some mild distortion in the echo FX, so although the melody is 'awesome', it only gets 4 stars overall (and the price had been reduced).

Album: Just Grand

PLAY: Just Grand: front cover
PLAY: Just Grand: back cover with track list

A collection of original themes and improvisations inspired by nature and love.

The solo instrumental PLAY CD "Just Grand" was recorded and produced in Sydney from 2000-2001. Hear me (Darren) solo on the piano - my first instrument. After many years of playing electro, trance, eccentric and eclectic, it was nice to bathe in the pure sound of grand again.
